Places to go… things to do

One of the (many) things we like about Asheville is that we live in a mountain range. Much like the White Mountains of New Hampshire, we get spectacular views of the Appalachians, and we get to go on mountain-like adventures. In fact did you know that Mt Mitchell (about 1.5 hours from Asheville) is higher than Mt Washington by 400ft? Surprising I know, but Mt Washington still has all the dangerous weather year round (they did have the highest wind speed ever recorded on Earth for some time).

Anyways this past weekend we took a little getaway with some friends to Gatlinburg, TN. To all the northern folk, it’s like Hampton Beach, but on steroids. It’s a crazy tourist trap, but it’s one of the last stops before entering the Great Smokey Mountain National Park. During our weekend we went on a short hike and visited Laurel Falls (pictured above). We all had a great time, and it was a chance to get away from North Carolina, even if it’s just a little while.

Over the next few months, we will be taking multiple trips, short and long, from Asheville. Next on the list is the first weekend in June, where we will be spending a 4 day weekend at our Nation’s Capital. There we will be celebrating our one year engagement anniversary. It’s a little tacky, especially since we’ll only be celebrating this once. But it’s a nice excuse to take a mini-vacation.

Unsupervised

I’d like to extend (another) welcome to the wedding website of Jared and Kathy. Some of you are seeing this site for the first time, others are wondering why there’s a house flying away on the top of the page. Nonetheless all your questions about the wedding (and other items) will be answered here as we get closer and closer to the wedding.

In order to generate more interest, I think we will start making posts on a weekly basis. For the time being we will do it on Tuesday night. This is good because I’m the only one here (mwa ha ha). So this will be an uncensored post (JEEPERS CREEPERS!!!)

I’ve added some information under our “Wedding Info” page, especially regarding the city of Asheville. A lot of people will be visiting the city for the first time, and there is a lot to do while down here. Take a look over at the page and find out for yourself! And as always if there are any questions just let Kathy or I know.

And that’s it! Sorry, I live an uninteresting life without my better half. I could talk about work. But then I would bore you.

Cheers,

Jared

T-Minus 365 Days!

Today, we stand before you in the exact spot where we will be married one year from now! Of course we won’t show you the entire view, that will spoil the surprise!

You would think that one year is far off, but we’ve been engaged for nearly 11 months! Wow the time has flown by here in Asheville! We still have a lot of preparing to do (not to mention a lot more posts here on The Spirit of Adventure… so stay tuned!). No major updates on the wedding for now. We will be sending out our save the dates within the week. Other than that it’s just normal life here in North Carolina (don’t worry, we don’t have a southern drawl……..yet)

We miss everyone back in New England and beyond. Keep checking the site now and again, cause we’re going to pick up some steam with the blog posts now that we are just under a year away!

Updates from down South

Hey y’all!

We know it’s been a while and so we thought that we would update everyone on the status of things.

A few weeks ago we put our deposit down on our venue (Crest Center), and today (although WAY ahead of schedule) we paid our remaining balance to our photographer (SEBG Photography.)

We will be receiving our Save The Dates tomorrow (Kathy has been feverishly tracking the UPS shipment) and will begin addressing them. Since we are having our wedding here in Asheville, we are sending our Save The Dates out earlier than normal so that our prospective guests can get cheaper airfare and make plans before things become more expensive.

Also, Jared’s parents will soon be sending out invitations for the engagement party, which will take place in Massachusetts, not too far from the Rennie home. They are being wonderful enough to host our party and so they will be the ones to send them out and receive RSVPs.

There are a lot of people on our guest list, however due to financial constraints, we cannot invite all of those to the wedding. In addition, some of our guests may not be able to make the trip to North Carolina for numerous reasons. While it does sadden us to not see everyone at the wedding, we are having this engagement party so as many people as possible can still celebrate our upcoming union with us!

We hope everyone is doing well!

What is the Spirit of Adventure?

If you have seen Disney/Pixar’s UP, then you know the story of Carl and Ellie. They were a perfect example of what everyone wants in a marriage: a happy, long life. While there are numerous bumps in the road, it’s the adventure that’s important.

In the movie, there is a man they both admire, named Charles Muntz (he ends up being the bad guy, but let’s forget about that for a moment). He owned a blimp named “The Spirit of Adventure,” and after some crazy twists and turns, Carl ends up with possession of the ship.

Enough with the spoilers, “The Spirit of Adventure” to me feels like a metaphor to the life of Carl and Ellie, something that is pristine and can only be obtained with the person you want to spend the rest of your life with. I believe that with Kathy, we can have our own spirit of adventure. And because of that, I chose the ship’s name as the name of our wedding website.

Also, during the wedding we will be having some UP “homages” that we hope everyone will enjoy. Let’s just hope Pixar won’t come knocking at my door. If they do, I’ll just remind them that it’s their innovation and story that helped this website flourish.

ADVENTURE IS OUT THERE!!!

Asheville Wedding Festival

Hey All!

This morning Jared and I attended the Wedding Festival that occurs here in Asheville a few times a year. (Jared was such a trooper being surrounded by so much estrogen!) I had been with my maid of honor and another friend in September and was completely overwhelmed. However, today’s festival had a much greater outcome! As we already know our venue and photographer, we were able to skip over those booths and focus on those we had still not thought of. We are happy to announce that we have almost all of our vendors picked out including the DJ, baker, florist, and the stationary store we will be using for invitations! Yes we are ahead of the curve by many months, but we are planners. Its getting easier to imagine our wedding in 1 year, 3 months, and 1 week. (I am not counting down or anything!)

More updates will come as we know them! Hope everyone’s 2012 is going well so far!

Some official news!

Hey everyone!

Hope everyone had a very Merry Christmas, and a wonderful New Year! I cannot believe it has been 7 months to the day since Jared proposed! Time is flying!

We figured for our first post of 2012, we would let everyone in on a few key details for our big day (such as a date, perhaps?) We have officially decided that our wedding will be on Sunday, April 21st, 2013 at the Crest Center here in Asheville, NC! We had booked our photographer (SEBG Photography) last month and will be putting our deposit down on our venue (Crest Center) next month.

Whether or not you will be able to come to the wedding, we will be having a quasi engagement party somewhere in New England sometime this Fall so that everyone can be involved. (Details are still to be determined.)

Although our wedding is still over a year away, we will be posting many updates on this site with more information on wedding details, plans, and stories from (the soon to be) Rennie household. Stay tuned!
