One of the (many) things we like about Asheville is that we live in a mountain range. Much like the White Mountains of New Hampshire, we get spectacular views of the Appalachians, and we get to go on mountain-like adventures. In fact did you know that Mt Mitchell (about 1.5 hours from Asheville) is higher than Mt Washington by 400ft? Surprising I know, but Mt Washington still has all the dangerous weather year round (they did have the highest wind speed ever recorded on Earth for some time).
Anyways this past weekend we took a little getaway with some friends to Gatlinburg, TN. To all the northern folk, it’s like Hampton Beach, but on steroids. It’s a crazy tourist trap, but it’s one of the last stops before entering the Great Smokey Mountain National Park. During our weekend we went on a short hike and visited Laurel Falls (pictured above). We all had a great time, and it was a chance to get away from North Carolina, even if it’s just a little while.
Over the next few months, we will be taking multiple trips, short and long, from Asheville. Next on the list is the first weekend in June, where we will be spending a 4 day weekend at our Nation’s Capital. There we will be celebrating our one year engagement anniversary. It’s a little tacky, especially since we’ll only be celebrating this once. But it’s a nice excuse to take a mini-vacation.
